Temporary Visitor Driver’s License

Temporary Visitor Driver’s License

As previously stated in this blog, undocumented immigrants living in Illinois may now apply for a driver’s license under Illinois law, /blog/undocumented-illinois-residents-to-be-allowed-driving-privileges. Prior to the passage of 625 ILCS 5/6-105.1, non-United States citizens without a valid visa could be subject to arrest for driving without a valid license.
Per the Illinois Secretary of State’s website, https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/drivers/TVDL/home.html, appointments are required to apply for the Temporary Visitor Drivers License. As of July 1, 2014, applicants 18-20 years of age must also provide documentation that a six hour driver’s education course has been completed.
Prior to the passage and implementation of this law, many undocumented persons were caught in the criminal justice system merely for driving to work. This law rectifies the situation.
